The Year 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the reform and opening up of the country. This is a momentous occasion for our country and for Hong Kong.
In the past 40 years, China has made remarkable achievements in economic and social development, as well as in improving people’s livelihood. Today, China is the world’s second largest economy with significant influence in the international community. During the process of reform and opening up, Hong Kong has been playing a crucial role as both a “contributor” and a “beneficiary”, developing jointly with our country and sharing the prosperity brought about by the reform and opening up policies.
At the beginning of the reform and opening up of the country, Hong Kong enterprises were pioneer investors in driving the development of manufacturing industries on the Mainland by bringing in investment, production and management skills. In the wake of changes to the economic system and industrial structure of our country, Hong Kong has seized the opportunity and transformed itself into a service-oriented economy, continuing to leverage our advantages to serve the country’s needs by attracting foreign enterprises to China and at the same time providing a platform for facilitating Mainland enterprises to go global. Looking forward, Hong Kong will continue to capitalise on our strengths and take up the role of “facilitator” and “promoter” to enhance Hong Kong's integration into the overall development of the country.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the reform and opening up of our country, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has set up a steering committee led by the Chief Secretary for Administration to coordinate celebration activities organised by government bureaux and the local community. Through these activities, we can reminisce how Hong Kong participated in the journey of reform and opening up of our country, as well as look forward to Hong Kong’s role and positioning in the overall development of our country in the future.
I look forward to your active participation in the activities for celebrating the 40th anniversary of the reform and opening up of our country.
Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region
